About the Author:
Hi! My name is Brenda.
Remodeling old homes, condo’s and buildings
is something I do for FUN and enjoyment! When I was a kid we moved
a lot. My dad was always adding a room in the basement and I liked
to help.
My real interest began when I was 19
years old. My aunt and uncle bought a home built in the late 1800’s.
I spent a summer stripping paint from their chandeliers
(turned out to be solid silver) and wall paper from their walls. Every
day was a new adventure and so my hobby was born.
Over the last 30 years I have remodeled
or helped remodel: 4 older homes, 2
Commercial Buildings and 1 Condominium. I also helped build one of my homes. In the
midst of all this “beating and banging” and gathering of information
(I learned as I went along…asking tons of questions), I noticed my utility
bills were getting higher. I soon learned that it was easy enough to
make them lower by doing some common sense things – like insulating,
caulking, weather stripping, etc.
The
more I asked and read and researched – the more I learned and did, the
lower my utility bills. In 2001, I went looking for a little book with
only projects to improve utility bills…there was none. So, I started
to write.
These projects are scattered everywhere…various websites, buried in
250 page home improvement books, sometimes mailed out as a leaflet in
utility bills. But, bottom line – they weren’t easy to find, easy to
access and didn’t provide enough information, like: How long will this
take? Exactly what should I buy? About how much will it cost? And
most importantly, about how much will I $ave?

“25
EZ Home Improvement to $ave Your Green”
answers these questions and has easy-to-follow instructions. Of course,
products and processes change all the time, so in every case, one should
FOLLOW the DIRECTIONS. When in doubt, ask the person in your Home Improvement
Store; they will be able to explain or may offer a workshop for free
that covers a project.
My utility $avings
will be different from yours, (because of where we live, design of our
homes, etc.). Our rates in this part of Austin are about $.12kwh.
Even with rate increases,
my energy bill is lower than my neighbors – and I have very little shade
around my condo; they have a lot more! My water bill is about half.
My savings are around $75-$115/month or $900-$1380 per year…not too
shabby and it was EZ to achieve.
As
you may have guessed, I am not a “youngster”…but, solidly middle age.
So, lest you think you have to be one of the “younger crowd” to do this…not
so!
If
you can move your body and spend 1-2 hours on weekends, or even one
weekend per month; you can finish all of these projects in 1-6 months! It
is that simple!
About Our Artist: Rachael Cansler
was 13/14 years old when she illustrated this book. I didn’t want something
“slick” or computer generated – just simple illustrations that made
good common sense. Rachael is now 17 and just in her Junior year in
High School. Computers are now, “her thing”! I think she did a great
job on this book…and know you’ll agree.
